This most famous of all comets travels around the sun in a flattened elliptical orbit that brings it near to the sun and then takes it far out to beyond the outer limits of the solar system. Ever since Feb. 9, 1986, when it arrived at perihelion — the comet's closest approach to the sun — it then began its long journey back out into distant space

    Awesome, see ya in 2061

Can you still see Halley's comet?

Halley's Comet last graced our skies in 1986 and is scheduled to make its next appearance in 2061. The annual appearance of the Orionids, however, serves as a friendly reminder of the comet's enduring presence. And if you miss the Orionids, don't fret!Oct 19, 2023

38 more years? Doubt if I'll be around to see it. I remember the last time it was here though, it was disappointing, for whatever reason. The best comet I've seen in my life was Kahoutek. That one was impressive.

Right, it just reached its aphelion- the end of its orbit. It is coming back from a very long way away.
