He does say things for effect. He’s pushing buttons and looking for a reaction.

Do you believe Russia is capable of attacking Europe? They can't even overcome Ukraine. Trump is just softening up western Europe so he can deal with them later. As during his Presidency he said things domestically intended for other world leaders, such as 'little rocket man' and that Kim should build condos on their fabulous beaches.

It didn't need to be said in Conway, SC.

    But
    - is there anyone here that thinks Trump would not defend NATO countries?
    - is the anyone here that thinks Putin would take that as a green light to attack Europe?

At the same time the threats against European leader to do their part has been ignored and something has to be done. That may start with holding back US funding for NATO again.
The willingness to let Ukraine fall by some is because NATO (and the EU in this case) is rooted in the US always getting stuck with the bill.

Europe is like my younger brother who always forgets his wallet.
    Let's go Brandon !!!

This is too much. Telling Russia to attack NATO is just too much.

"One of the presidents of a big country stood up and said, 'Well, sir, if we don't pay, and we're attacked by Russia, will you protect us?" I said, "You didn't pay, you're delinquent?''
"No, I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want. You got to pay. You got to pay your bills."
    https://news.yahoo.com/nikki-haley-denounces-donald-trumps-004504437.html

"She comes over to see me at Mar-a-Lago - 'sir, I will never run against you' ... She brought her husband," Trump said.
The former president then added: "Where’s your husband? ... Oh, he’s away ... He’s away ... What happened to her husband? What happened to her husband?! Where is he?! ... He’s gone! He knew! He knew!"
Haley quickly responded to Trump on the social media site X, formerly Twitter, noting that the Republican nomination frontrunner never served in the military.
"Michael is deployed serving our country, something you know nothing about," Haley said. "Someone who continually disrespects the sacrifices of military families has no business being commander in chief."

It was story about what he said to NATO some time ago because they weren't paying. I'm not sure Russia ever heard it, I doubt he would have done that. It is probably an exaggerated braggadocio story.
    Having said that
    WTF Trump?

In negotiation, he who cares less, wins.

Europe began to pay into NATO.

Impolitic ? Sure ! ...but it worked.
You're making the same mistake Trump keeps making. He never seemed to grasp that the obligations of member NATO countries wasn't to "pay into NATO." It was to pay for their own military. And the president who got the NATO members to agree to spend 2% of their GDP by 2024 on their own military was Obama. They made that commitment in 2014.

We can do quite well without the free loading Europeans. Let them fall.

If I understand correctly, NATO's 2% GDP target is only a guideline. Not an obligation. So if Trump refused to help out a NATO country being attacked, he would be in breech of the treaty, regardless of how much that nation spent on defense. Those nations know this.

That guideline --or something similar to it-- ought to be made mandatory. But for now, Trump is only hurting NATO and helping Putin with such talk.

Pull out of the treaty. Problem solved.
