Finally finished Robert Paxton's The Anatomy of Fascism. It's a good book to read, filled to overwhelming with facts from history, a broad range of fascisms around Europe mostly, and over time the changing face of fascism. When you're done, however, you will be stuck with coming up with a precise definition of fascism, and the author fails to do so himself. I don't mean to criticize as the book provides you with a wealth of information and thought on the subject. The penultimate chapter also fails in its consideration of the possibility of another fascism.

Jennifer Pharr Davis, Becoming Odyssa: Adventures on the Appalachian Trail. Personal story of a woman hiking the AT. Less about scenery than person adventure and discovery. She's done it 3 times now, last time setting the trail record by hiking it in 46 days, 11 hours, and 20 minutes.

There are so many books I want to get to before I assume room temperature, but I really do hope that I will find the time to re-read the Gormenghast trilogy.

I was in the hospital just about forty years ago and came upon a coverless paperback copy of the second book, 'Gormenghast'. I'd never read anything like it before, and have very seldom found anything remotely like it since. For those who haven't read Mervyn Peake, try to imagine a writer with both an incredible imagination and a total control of the language...so that he could spend an entire chapter describing a single character, or even the contents of a room, and you're completely caught up in the images his word create.

The BBC produced a mini-series based on the stories in 2000, and my sister even sent me a copy of it on DVD, but I've never watched it and am actually in no hurry to.

Reading Tiger and Phil right now. Along with a comprehensive Russain History Text. Like you, Wolf, I have so much I want to read before I cant any longer. So I usually stick to history. My library only has the downloadable version of Gormenghast so I guess I may buy that first in the triology.

I'm not going to be able to get into them right away, but I made a great discovery at a thrift shop over in Mesa yesterday. I never go over to that part of the valley, but I was over there helping my daughter with something and I wanted to check out at least one of the thrift stores in town for books before I left.

What I found was the 1962 Heritage Press edition of Sir Richard Francis Burton's unexpurgated translation of 'The Book of the Thousand and One Nights and a Night' in three volumes, for which I paid less than $10.

These copies didn't come with the individual slipcases, but they're in really wonderful condition. I've wanted to have the entire work since I read some excerpts from it years ago. This is not the cleaned-up, PG 'Arabian Nights' version you usually find.

Ron Hansen's Desperadoes. The story of the Dalton gang as told by Emmett Dalton the last surviving Dalton and an end of an era novel. The first-person narrative is much better than Hansen's overly detailed The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. The final two-bank robbery in Coffeyville on October 5, 1892 is gripping and gruesome, the townsfolk turning out to stop them, and only Emmett survives to become famous later in Hollywood.
