    Paradox of Tolerance

Karl Popper, The Open Society and Its Enemies, wrote:

Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. — In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant.

    Popper, hardly. Never read him?

It's a great book against Plato, Hegel and Marx.

Let me see if I can simplify the paradox.

Tolerance allows for intolerance. To the extreme, intolerance that destroys you and society.

Neo-Nazis are intolerant, right, and if we allow it, it would destroy what we value.

So we can't be so absolutely tolerant.

But this is where it gets complex. If we become intolerant then we become the same as the intolerance we're against.

    So what do we do?

Popper suggests we use rational argument to persuade public opinion against intolerance.

It's been a long day for me. Sounds like a potentially interesting discussion, but right now it's all I can do to post a semi-coherent comment in the Vegetables thread. (There's a joke in there somewhere, but I'm too tired to look for it.) Maybe tomorrow.

Yeah; it's too bad that we in the US have free speech.

The movement to intolerance on our campuses threaten the freedom of future free speech.

Long as we maintain it. I'm reminded of Franklin's retort, "A republic, if you can keep it."

    Yeah, that's a good quote.

We gotta have our free speech unencumbered though. The best thing is not to show up at those silly hate rallies.

Instead the left and left wing media are giving them great exposure then by ignoring the left wing violence probably helping to swell their ranks. Congrats lefties!
