10 facts about the 30 Years War

10 facts about the 30 Years War

This is a good article about the 30 years war. I like its first fact: that it was not a religious war. It was about power and money. Like 99% of all wars in history.

Huh? The 30 Years’ War? This is a pretty random war to highlight, I admit, but it’s one that deserves a bit more scrutiny, if only to add some color to your week and small talk at your next $#@!tail party. Fought between numerous polities from 1618-1648, the 30 Years’ War is infamous for its high rate of civilian casualties and the devastation it wrought on the area that is now known as Germany.

Here are 10 facts about the 30 Years’ War you probably didn’t know:

All everything is about power, but to say it wasn't about religion is like saying slavery had nothing to do with the American civil war. I mean great great great grandpappy may not have owned any slaves, but the reason them yankees came down here had everything to do with slavery.

I disagree with both of the points you seem to be trying to make.

Your disagreeability is noted but the reason we have a first amendment has no small part to do with the religious wars in Europe.

It is fashionable to believe European wars in that era were over religion. But if you actually read about it, it is clear religion is a side issue.

But modern college level education is piss poor in the US.

I didn't read that in anything modern. It was some 19th century I believe it was text about economics of colonialism. Forget the source now. The framers looked at the various ways power in society had operated. Freedom of religion was grounded in religion being a source of power and conflict. No titles of nobility because nobility comes with power and influence. The push for westward expansion and the settling of land was because of the belief that self-sufficient farm folks would not be controlled by mercantilism. There were a few others that don't come to mind at this late hour. Maybe one day I will be motivated to track that source down again.
